Giovanni Zenatello AND THE ENTE LIRICO DI VERONA
Giovanni Zenatello (1876-1949) was, as Caruso, a leading figure in the opera world, internationally known and appreciated. In 1913 he decided, after a long career, to financiate with the theatre manager Ottone Rovato an opera festival in the Arena of Verona, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth and transforming the Arena in the biggest open-air opera theatre of the world.
Giovanni Zenatello was the man who discovered and presented Maria Callas on the stage of the Arena with main character in "La Gioconda" of Ponchielli. The actress lived for a long period in the Hotel Accademia, property of Giovanni Zenatello.
